Chole-Bhature Recipe
Chole Bhature is a popular North Indian dish that combines spicy chickpea
curry (chole) with soft, fluffy fried bread (bhature). It’s a hearty and
flavorful meal often enjoyed for breakfast or lunch, especially in Punjabi
cuisine. The chole are made by simmering boiled chickpeas in a rich, tangy
gravy of tomatoes, onions, and aromatic spices, while the bhature are
prepared from fermented dough and deep-fried until golden and puffed.
Served together with onions, pickle, and a squeeze of lemon, Chole Bhature
is a delicious and satisfying dish loved across India for its bold flavors
and comforting taste.
Ingredients
- For Chole (Chickpeas Curry)
- 1 cup chickpeas (kabuli chana) – soaked overnight
- 2 onions – finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes – pureed
- 1 green chili – chopped
- 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
- 2 tbsp oil or ghee
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 bay leaf
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1½ tsp coriander powder
- 1 tsp cumin powder
- 1½ tsp red chili powder
- 1½ tsp garam masala
- Salt to taste
- Fresh coriander leaves – for garnish

(Optional: 1 black tea bag for darker color while boiling chana)
- Ingredients for Bhature
- 2 cups maida (all-purpose flour)
- 2 tbsp semolina (sooji)
- 2 tbsp curd (yogurt)
- 1 tsp sugar
- ½ tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp baking soda
- Salt to taste
- Water – as needed to knead
- Oil – for deep frying
- Steps to Prepare Chole Bhature:

Step 1: Boil Chole – Soak overnight, pressure cook
for 5–6 whistles with salt and optional tea bag, then drain.

Step 2: Make Chole Masala – Sauté onions, add
ginger-garlic, tomatoes, and spices. Add boiled chickpeas and simmer
10–15 mins.

Step 3: Prepare Bhature – Mix all ingredients, knead
soft dough, rest 2–3 hrs, roll and deep fry till golden.
